For Younger Students

Great poetry lesson from Janet S. Wong. Combine with grammar by requiring a certain number of prepositional phrases in each poem.

For Teens

Great poetry lesson from Janet S. Wong. You can combine this with a grammar lesson by requiring a certain number of subordinate clauses in each poem. This site seems to be inactive, but the directions for the activities and the photos are still available. Use a learning management system (Blackboard, Haiku, etc.) or a website with discussion board feature to play poetry tag online. In this way, you will combine several standards in one lesson.

Great ideas. I love to use poetry to teach writing. Students are more inclined to play with language for the desired effect than when writing prose.
